HILLSONG UNITED

After becoming the first Christian artist to sell out Staples Center in Los Angeles, logging sold out events at major venues coast-to-coast this winter/spring and subsequently gathering Pollstar Magazine’s April 11 “Hotstar” cover feature, modern worship band Hillsong UNITED returns to North America this summer to pick up where they left off.  The band will perform at the St. Pete Times Forum on Friday, August 5 at 7:30 p.m. Singing the favorites that have helped sell over 11 million albums, the band will also play songs from AFTERMATH, Hillsong UNITED’s acclaimed 2011 release that topped retail sales charts internationally, hit No. 17 on the Billboard Top 200 and continues to be its fastest selling album ever.

While on tour, and in response to nationwide food bank deficits, Hillsong UNITED is partnering with local churches and agencies to again facilitate an I-HEART: This Means Love Food Drive in each city they visit. “Yes, the world is a mess but the Good News is that it can get better; all it takes is a little more love and unity,” says Hillsong UNITED’s Jad Gillies, as he urges people attending the tour to bring to the event non-perishable food to help meet the needs of their neighbors.  Over 7,000 family meals were collected for those that need them most during the Feb/March US leg of the tour.

Born out of the Youth Movement of Australia’s Hillsong Church, and fronted by worship leaders Joel Houston, Jad Gillies and Jonathon “JD” Douglass, the UNITED team is also an evolving collaboration of pastors, worship leaders, musicians and songwriters - all intentional about giving voice to a generation passionate about God. Having led worship in churches, stadiums and open fields in Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas, Hillsong UNITED’s AFTERMATH is the first new album from the band in over two years. The recording sparked the band’s biggest radio hit to date, “Search My Heart,” and offers an unabashedly creative collection of new songs that celebrates the One who saves, redeems and is the true representation of Hope in a world where hopelessness abounds.

THE GREAT GATSBY PARTY

Whisper the password to enter the secret world of a speakeasy. Enjoy live music, games of chance, fabulous food, an open bar and your photo taken with a vintage Rolls. Expect a raid, at the most dangerous evening of the year...1920's clothing encouraged, but not required. The Great Gatsby Party will be held in Fletcher Lounge, The University of Tampa.

This will be a legendary party, just like Jay Gatsby’s parties in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby. Instead of a Long Island home, this unique evening will take place in the fashionable Tampa Bay Hotel dining room. The roaring twenties will come to life as gangsters demand the password to enter through the custom designed doors to the merrymaking. Fabulous music will set the tone for dancing and entertainment. Black Jack and Roulette are offered for those who feel lucky. Recreated menus from the 1920’s Tampa Bay Hotel will indulge even the most gourmet palette. And don’t miss the Prohibition Punch!

2011 TAMPA INTERNATIONAL
GAY & LESBIAN FILM FESTIVAL

Friends of the Festival, Inc. (FOF) is the name of non-profit (501c3) organization that produces the Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, which began in 1990 through the outreach of several local community based organizations.

The first Film Festival was created as a fundraiser under the name Pride Film Festival, followed by Suncoast Film Festival. Then in the late 1990’s became known as the Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival (TIGLFF). When Friends of the Festival, Inc. was formed as a legal 501(c)3 non-profit organization it assumed TIGLFF as its DBA name.

In 2005 FOF began expanding content to include a year-round Film Series with Screenings now on both sides of the bay. And in 2007 Outreach programming was added, which allows us to screen free film content around the metro area to reach the more under-served groups within our community.

DEEPAK CHOPRA
HEALING, TRANSFORMATION AND HIGHER CONSCIOUSNESS

Deepak Chopra, author of more than 55 books translated into more than 35 languages, including numerous New York Times bestsellers in both the fiction and nonfiction categories, is heralded by Time magazine as one of the top 100 heroes and icons of the century and credits him as “the poet-prophet of alternative medicine.” Are we in the midst of a major paradigm shift in science? Is there an ultimate reality? Does consciousness conceive, govern, construct and become the physical universe? Is the universe becoming self aware in the human nervous system? How does our understanding of consciousness also enhance our capacity for total well being? Deepak Chopra will address these and other questions as well as practical ways to experience higher consciousness, transformation and healing.

RED BULL FLUGTAG TAMPA BAY

On October 8th the outrageous human-powered flying competition known
as Red Bull Flugtag will once again soar over the West Coast…of Florida with a return to Tampa Bay.
While Red Bull Flugtag’s 2008 stop in Tampa saw its share of Baywatch lifeguards, cartoon characters and various footwear, it’s up to the creative public to produce a new set of airborne heroes.

Flugtag, which means “flying day” in German, is the only competition where the creative, brave and often
slightly crazy get to pilot homemade flying machines off the end of a 30-foot ramp and into the great wide
open – or, as is ultimately the case, the great wide waters below.  Approximately 40 teams of up to five
members each will get the chance to prove their chops, shake their feathers and test their engine-free
inventions at The Tampa Convention Center.  But time’s –a- flyin’ so sharpen your pencils and get the
creative juices flowing!  All brave souls must apply online at www.redbullflugtagusa.com by July 8, 2011 for consideration in this high flying affair.

Teams will be judged on three criteria: distance, creativity and showmanship.  Distance is measured in flying feet - how far can your craft soar? Creativity, on the other hand, ensures an extraordinary flying day, so save your plane-jane replicas for next year’s science project and shift imagination into overdrive. We’re looking for the unusual, the head-turning…even the slightly shocking!  Finally, showmanship requires that each team spend one minute on the flight deck strutting their stuff before launching their craft.  So think big, get sketching and show us what you’ve got!

Since the first Red Bull Flugtag took place in Vienna, Austria, in 1991, more than 80 Flugtags have been
held around the globe, attracting up to 300,000 spectators for a single event. Each team will glide, splash or crash into the Seddon Channel at some point and as of last year there’s a new distance goal to work towards. The record for the farthest flight-to-date was set at Red Bull Flugtag Twin Cities in 2010 and stands at 207 feet.

While the sky may be the limit on creativity, there are still a few flight regulations.  First off, all flying
machines must be entirely human-powered (no external energy sources or stored power, so forget about the slingshots, catapults or anything besides your own burliness.)  Second, no matter what they say, size does matter – all crafts must be less than 30 feet wide and must weigh no more than 450lbs (including the pilot).

Although originality is key and daredevils are welcome, there are a few rules.  All flying machines must be
entirely human-powered (no external energy sources or stored power so forget about the slingshots, catapults or anything besides your own brawn).  Second, all crafts must be less than 30 feet wide.  And finally, no matter what they say, size does matter – all crafts must weigh less than 450 lbs (including the pilot.)

3RD ANNUAL FLORIDA HALLOWEEN HALFATHON & 5K RACE

Join us for a howling good time during our 3rd Annual Halloween Halfathon & 5K Race at Fort De Soto Park, located near St. Petersburg on Florida's beautiful west coast at the mouth of Tampa Bay.

Create unique costumes in the spirit of this festive holiday, but ones that will not adversely affect your performance. Or simply wear mismatched uniforms. Or orange and black.

Both our courses are located entirely in Ft. De Soto Park, starting and finishing adjacent to the park's North Beach, regularly recognized as one of the nation's best beaches. These races will be run on paved access roads and recreational trails.

They are extremely flat courses, with no bridges, overpasses, or discernible inclines. They will be accurately measured and certified by the USATF.

Both races start the same, with a 5K loop that returns athletes to the start/finish area. Post-race party begins as the 5K athletes arrive, while the Halfathoners will continue on the 10-mile out-and-back tour of Ft. De Soto Park.

Finish line treats will include fresh fruit, hot pasta, cold Michelob Ultra, and live entertainment.

Citing a "spectacular combination of soft white sand, calm clear water, and a laid-back atmosphere," TripAdvisory named Ft. De Soto Park America's Top Beach, based on their Popularity Index.

This marks the third time in four years the pristine beach has received top honors on an annual "best-of" list. In 2005, Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, aka "Dr. Beach," named Ft. De Soto the nation's #1 Beach.

THE perfect place to race, party, and relax.

Come! Join us for tricks, treats and the beach!

VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS STROLL

Christmas traditions are created by families and passed along from generation to generation.  These time-honored rituals thrill us when we are children and later, as adults, they call forth memories that comfort us in an uncertain world. Experience an old-fashioned holiday with your loved ones at Henry B. Plant Museum’s 30th annual Victorian Christmas Stroll from December 1st to 23rd, 2011, 10 am to 8 pm daily.

Beneath towering silver minarets, an extravagantly adorned former Tampa Bay Hotel captures the spirit of the season – Victorian style.  There are 14 exhibit rooms; each dazzling with trimmed trees uniquely designed in 19th century themes and antique holiday accessories.  While strolling down the Grand Hallway, your spirits will soar as you become immersed in carolers singing, Charles Dickens, much loved toys and wrapped gifts, Christmas stockings and Old Saint Nick.

Unique to this year is a game for children. Where’s Henry? Somewhere amid the myriad of decorations is an image of Henry Plant.  Children will be entertained searching for Henry, the founder of the Hotel, strategically placed in each exhibit room. They will be given a checklist and if they can locate his image in every room, they will receive a prize.

Santa Claus is coming to the Victorian Christmas Stroll on Thursday, December 23rd from 10am-1pm. Complimentary with your Stroll admission; Santa will sit in the authentic Writing and Reading Room of the Tampa Bay Hotel and listen to children's requests. You may bring a camera to commemorate this unique occasion, but remember no "flash photography" in the Museum.

At the Victorian Christmas Stroll, the essence of an old-fashioned holiday is observed and honored as Tampa’s most popular family tradition. Complimentary spiced cider and savory cookies will be served on the veranda every day, and each evening (6 - 7:45 pm) carolers will perform music for your merriment. Visitors are invited to sing with the carolers in front of the 18-foot tree in the hallway. Admission is $13 adults, $11 seniors (65 and older), $7 youth (4-18 years). Discount Days are December 5, 6, 12, and 13 when admissions are reduced to $9 adults, $8 seniors (65 and older),  $5 youth (4-18 years). Group tours are welcome: please make reservations for parties of 20 or more with Sally Shifke, Museum Relations Coordinator, (813) 258-7302.

The Museum Store has a huge selection of merchandise, from gorgeous ornaments to silver serving pieces and exquisite holiday accessories. The Museum Store also offers books, fragrances, jewelry, children’s toys, stationery, and home accessories. Enjoy shopping in a unique Victorian atmosphere: the Museum Store is open from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm daily and no admission is required.

Proceeds from the Victorian Christmas Stroll fund significant museum restoration and preservation projects, as well as educational programming.

Underwriters of the Victorian Christmas Stroll are The Beck Group, Jacarlene Foundation,  New York Yankees Tampa Foundation, Tampa Downtown Partnership, The Tampa Tribune/WFLA News Channel 8, UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation and Walkers Shortbread.

7TH ANNUAL CLEARWATER HALFATHON

It might be the most challenging half marathon in Florida, with two ascents each over two relatively tall bridges connecting Clearwater to the barrier islands.

It might be Florida's most scenic half marathon, as the entire course is within 1/4 mile of Clearwater Bay and / or the Gulf of Mexico.

The Clearwater Memorial Bridge and The Sand Key Bridge provide both the demanding challenges and the spectacular views.

The finish line will be open for 3 hours from the 7:05 a.m. start, and the course will open to traffic based upon that pace. For instance, athletes should be at the midpoint by 8:35 a.m. Athletes slower than that will need to move to the sidewalks and adhere to all pedestrian laws. Fitness walkers anticipating a finish time beyond 3 hours MUST start early at 6:35 a.m., which increases total finish time to 3.5 hours.

TAMPA BAY HURRICANE EXPO 2012

We hope you will join us for the 2012 Tampa Bay Hurricane Expo at the Museum of Science & Industry on Saturday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Personal preparation has always been the focus of our Tampa Bay Hurricane Expo.

Whether it is the 2008 theme - Know Your Zone; Make a Plan – which focused on the importance of knowing your evacuation zone and making an effective plan for you and your family to follow in the event of a hurricane.

The 2009 theme - Run From the Water; Hide From the Wind – which meant that if you were asked to evacuate, you wouldn’t have to travel far. Just get out of the storm surge area and hunker down in a relative, friend, coworker or church member’s home who doesn’t have to evacuate.

Or the 2010 theme - The First 72 Are Up To You – which meant that after a natural or man-made disaster it is important for families to have the water, food, batteries and other essentials they will need to sustain themselves for at least three days. During this time, roads will be blocked by debris, utilities, such as power, water and sewer may be out, and local governments will be working hard to establish these essential services.

By residents being prepared, our community will recover quicker after a storm.

While our local emergency responders are ready for any disaster we face, they still look to you, our residents, to help. So, think sunshine, and we look forward to seeing you next May at the 2012 Tampa Bay Hurricane Expo as we all continue to prepare for hurricane season.

On Saturday, June 2, 2012, Francis House will be having our first annual Go Eat Tampa Bay fundraiser.

Much like Sticks of Fire from years ago, Go Eat Tampa Bay is a unique fundraiser which relies on the host homes. Individuals that would like to host a party but are not able to do so on June 4, can committ to another date and still join the dessert reception. The generous donation also applies to those who wish to join in dessert reception merriment. (Suggested donation of $20 is greatly appreciated)

If you would like to be a host recruiter, host home or would like some additional information on Go Eat Tampa Bay, please call Vicky Oliver @ 813-237-3066 or Rob Loy @ (813) 503-8691.

Anyone who is interested in entering should contact Laura Beuhring at 813-631-4375 or email her at lbeuhring@tampasportsauthority.com.

The Forest Hills Neighborhood Association will provide free activities open to the public on the grounds of the golf course throughout the afternoon. A concert will start at 11 a.m. with local acts Zuberi Brown, Big Wiggler and Johnny G. Lyon. There will also be a moonwalk, clowns and a coloring book contest for kids. Food, beverages and desserts will be available for purchase on site.
